What Art. 4 requires
Since 02.02.2025, Art. 4 of the EU AI Regulation applies, the AI literacy duty. Companies must ensure that the people who operate or use AI systems receive context-appropriate support for AI literacy. This concerns not only developers, but everyone who works with AI in daily work. The law does not prescribe a specific format, but it does require that the competence actually exists and can be demonstrated. This is exactly where many classic trainings fail, because after 30 days little sticks and the record is an attendance sheet.
Why a mandatory training that gets forgotten does not solve the problem
A competence record on paper is a legal start, but of little practical value if people do not use the tools afterwards. Transfer from passive learning cannot be evaluated reliably without measurement, a substantial share never applies what they heard. Anyone who takes the duty seriously wants competence that lands in daily work, not just a tick on the compliance list. A format that provably sticks can contribute to a documented Article 4 implementation better than one that only formally ticks it.
How the hackathon can contribute to a documented Article 4 implementation
With the Corporathon hackathon you get an internal AI literacy measures record and real competence at the same time. Your team learns the AI tools by solving a real problem from your daily work with them. At the end you have not only the record, but a working prototype, a skills library and an impact report. The competence is provable because it shows up in built results. The format can contribute as a context-appropriate measure supporting AI literacy. The company must assess whether its overall program is appropriate for the relevant roles and risks.
Next steps to your competence record
- Intro call. Clarify starting point, teams and goals.
- Tools and challenges call. Pick real challenges, set the toolstack.
- Finalization. Bring info, access and data together, GDPR compliant.
- Hackathon preparation. Set up environment and flow.
- Tool workshop. Hands-on start on the stack on your own case.
- Hackathon sprint. Teams build on their challenges with live coaching.
- Result pitches and competence record. Each team shows its prototype, you get the record.
Challenges that also prove competence
Email reply assistant, daily briefing agent, meeting-to-action-items, executive reporting autopilot and internal knowledge bot are challenges where each participant shows they can handle AI tools confidently. Anyone who built such an agent themselves has not just heard about AI competence, but applied it. That is exactly what Art. 4 requires at its core.
Quick comparison: mandatory training vs. hackathon
A pure mandatory training delivers a record and little behavior change, retention that is unclear without transfer measurement. The hackathon delivers the same record plus measurable practical transfer, plus a prototype. For the same legal purpose you get far more value in the hackathon. FAQ
Since when does the AI literacy duty apply? Since 02.02.2025. Art. 4 of the EU AI Regulation obliges companies to take measures to support the development of AI literacy for everyone who operates or uses AI systems. This concerns not only technical roles, but everyone who uses AI in daily work.
Does the Corporathon hackathon count as a record? Yes. With the hackathon you get an internal AI literacy measures record. In addition, the impact report and skills library document which competences were built. That is more than an attendance sheet, because the competence shows up in built results.
Who in the company is affected by the duty? Everyone who operates or uses AI systems, not only IT. In practice that means marketing, sales, HR, finance and management. That is why a format that brings mixed teams up to speed together fits better than a pure developer course.
Does the hackathon replace legal advice? No. We deliver the training and the competence record, not legal advice. For the concrete interpretation of Art. 4 in your case, involve your legal department or a specialist lawyer. We make sure the competence is actually there.

Training depth: why training matters only when it is applied
This domain needs to be the strongest answer for AI training in German search. The searcher expects structure, safety and a clear learning path. The better answer is: yes, there is tool input and didactic guidance, but training does not end at understanding. It ends with application. Every core page should explain how employees move from foundations to their own challenge and why the prototype is the real learning test.
Employee perspective, not only HR perspective
AI training wins when employees feel enabled, not examined. Strong pages therefore speak not only about certificate and duty, but about relief in daily work: less copy paste, better research, faster replies, clearer meetings, fewer manual reports. That makes the training domain more human and stronger than pure compliance communication.
Rechtsstand Artikel 4, 20.08.2026

Article 4 legal status, 20 August 2026
Article 4 has applied since 2 February 2025 and was amended in July 2026 by Regulation (EU) 2026/1744. The current text requires providers and deployers of AI systems to take measures supporting the development of AI literacy among staff and other persons working with the systems on their behalf. It does not mandate a specific individual level or a specific certificate. Internal records of training and other measures can document implementation. A hackathon can form part of a context-appropriate set of measures but does not automatically guarantee legal compliance.

A hackathon, workshop or training can contribute to role- and context-appropriate AI literacy measures and create suitable internal evidence. It is not an officially prescribed certificate, does not replace legal advice and cannot guarantee compliance on its own. The organisation must assess its complete programme against the relevant roles, systems, risks and use context.
